How long is a balance?
Treatments vary in length due to each one being unique to what your body needs on that day but they are usually between 45 minutes to an hour. I allow longer for a first appointment, usually around 90 minutes, as I need to take an in depth medical history to make sure the treatment is safe for you.
How much is a balance and how can I pay?
Initial appointments are £65, follow-up appointments are £50 (subject to change). You can pay by cash at the end of your treatment. I’m sorry but I do not currently accept cards or cheques.
What will you do?
Each balance is unique to a person for that particular day. Our bodies are constantly changing and going through different experiences so what I do depends on you! I will always consider your medical history and your “Godai” (see page “About Amatsu”) to ensure a safe treatment. Amatsu is a manual therapy so I will be carrying out diagnostic tests including orthopaedic tests and muscle testing which involve me touching you. Some movements you will carry out yourself, for example showing me your range of movement in an area of concern. Amatsu is a gentle therapy, you may experience some discomfort but the application of Taijutsu to the treatment ensures safe mobilisation and stretching. I get asked so many times if it’s a massage – no is the short answer! While we may need to use massage to make corrections when there is imbalance we have many more tools to help us. If there is anything that worries or concerns you, just let me know.
How can I prepare for a balance?
Drink plenty of fluids (preferably water) and turn off your mobile phone to avoid any interruptions. Dress in appropriate clothing and have a think about any changes to your medical history since your last treatment so we can discuss them.
What do I need to wear?
Loose, comfy clothing is best, for example jogging bottoms and a t-shirt. There’s nothing fancy about it, just be comfortable! You will be getting on and off a treatment couch and turning over a number of times. I will also need to mobilise parts of your body so tight, restrictive clothing is not suitable. Please also make sure you wear or bring some clean socks with you.
What do I need to do after a treatment?
Your body needs to adjust so strenuous exercise should be avoided for 24 hours after a balance. I do however advise a short walk if you feel able to, wear low shoes with no heels and go barefoot around the house if you can. Drink plenty of water to flush away toxins and avoid alcoholic/caffeinated drinks for the rest of the day if possible. Eat simple, bland foods to let your digestive system have a bit of a rest. If anything feels achey you can warm the area with a heated wheat bag or hot water bottle. You could always have a warm bath to relax, just be kind to your body!
What information will you need about me and what do you do with that information?
I will need to take a full medical history at your first appointment. This includes any previous surgeries or injuries and general lifestyle information. This is so I can build a picture of the stresses and strains your body has encountered through the years and consider whether they could be affecting anything you are currently having issues with. Everything in the body is linked so yes, the broken toe you had when you were aged 5 could still be having an impact on you! All information is confidential and kept in accordance with The Data Protection Act 1984 and GDPR.
Is there anything that would mean I can’t have a treatment?
Although Amatsu is suitable for most people there are some conditions that would be classed as a “contra-indication”. Sometimes a contra-indication would mean I have to adapt the way I work and avoid certain areas or omit certain corrections. Others will mean I cannot treat you at all. For example, a balance cannot go ahead if you have a fever or an acute infection. If you have had a recent surgery (within the last couple of months) and aren’t signed off by your Doctor or you are in the first trimester of pregnancy you will also not be able to have a treatment. I will ask you to complete a quick questionnaire before you attend a treatment to give me an idea of any issues that could arise but please do contact me if you have any concerns and we can discuss the suitability of Amatsu for you. Above all your body needs to be treated safely and with respect. I will not carry out a treatment if it’s not suitable for your body at that time.
How many sessions will I need?
Although an improvement can often be seen after one session I would suggest at least three to four treatments approximately one week apart to begin with. These can then be followed up with treatments further apart for maintenance. All of our bodies are different so there is no written rule. Some people may need more treatments if they have had an injury or problem for quite a while but most benefit from regular sessions.
